Wonderful; Visions of the Near Future

Client: Wellcome Trust/NESTA
Curated by Clare Cumberlidge
Graphic design by Graphic Thought Facility
2004

Designed to tour to three different venues (Arnolfini, Bristol; Magna, Rotherham; Cornerhouse, Manchester), this exhibition explored collaborations between artists and scientists. Designed by BKD to appear monumental while remaining flexible and intimate, the results of each collaboration were housed in two interlocking modules; varying in scale but providing the viewer with a sense of enclosure and privacy. The roofed boxes were clad in slatted timber suffused with yellow light, creating a unified appearance. However, various other materials, ranging from feathers to felt to PVC strips, were selected in collaboration with the artists to add another dimension of difference to each module, and to hint at the contents within.

Wonderful (the exhibition) investigates science within a broad cultural and philosophical framework, inviting visitors to consider their own position in relation to ethical issues emerging from current developments in technology and scientific research.
